THE GAZES
This piece of work encapsulates and reflects an opinion in our world today by examining the male gaze found in the family album. I have combined sets of two photographs from my family album that centre around woman and I have overlaid them to create new images. The images reflect certain values, challenges, and perceptions of women and shows how men are watching them or looking down on them.
Overlaying two images emphasises the gaze that is not immediately evident in the single original photograph. There are two categories in this body of work, the male gaze and the female gaze and this is shown as two separate sets of three images.
Men photograph and sexualise woman doing trivial things and every photograph in this series was taken by a man. As a woman I have taken away their gaze in three of the images enabling woman to be their own muse; the women take the place of the male photographer to admire themselves. This work looks at the photographs from our past and highlights issues that are still relevant today. This is not solely about the women in my family, it is for the women in all our families.
