Sometimes we are taken into troubled waters, not to drown, but to be cleansed. I have placed people in this ‘water of depression’ to represent all those who are currently drowning and cannot catch a breath. The subjects are placed in water to bring this mental struggle into the physical world and to help the viewer understand.

 

The cold unpredictable water represents the weight of the mental struggle weighing down on them, and the subjects represent those affected. The images are focused on the subject but framed towards their reflection. The hazy, unclear, and rippled reflection depicts the mental state of those with depression and this will lead to the images seeming upside down or back to front to the viewer. Their world has been turned upside down.

 

The images are in B&W because having depression is like being colour blind when everyone around you is seeing in colour. Depression is cold, he is unwelcoming, and is blurry to those who do not know him. I have taken a portrait of depression and not the face that is playing host to him.
